My brief profile.
My name is L. Subramani, a journalist for 22 years living in
Bangalore, India. I became totally blind aged 18 due to a genetic
retinal condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa which transformed my
life as a teenager.
Before the onset of the condition, I aspired to graduate as an
accountant. Since my blindness, I dreamt to be a journalist and built
on the skills and the technology. Following a five-year freelancing
stint, I became a reporter and later a copy editor for Deccan Herald,
one of the famous English dailies in India. Now, I am one of only
three totally blind journalists in the employ of a newspaper.
In 2014, Random House India published my memoir “Lights Out: The True
Story Of A Man’s Descent Into Blindness”. The memoir dealt with how
the retinal condition challenged me and traumatized my family.
Now, I’m working on my second memoir to tell the story of how I live
my dream of becoming a journalist.
